LIPS is a proprietary piled raft system which provides a one-stop foundations solution, resulting in a clean and safe surface for follow-on trades to commence the next stage of works. An extremely versatile product, it lends itself well to both single and multiple plots of any size. It is fully customisable and can be adapted to suit varying land gradients and all ground conditions, with or without the influence of heave. We have previously constructed LIPS for a diverse range of projects within both the public and private sectors, including housing, apartment blocks, offices, schools and hospitals.
The LIPS system will enable you to reduce or eliminate the following individual operations and costs:
- Setting out
- Excavation and cranage
- Spoil removal (muck away)
- Use of proprietary anti-heave material
- Breaking down pile heads
- Substructure brickwork
- Precast flooring
- Over-site concrete
- Delivery and waiting time for other void forming materials.
- Supervision for all of the above
Devised in-house by our expert engineers, LIPS has proven to be one of the most cost effective systems in the UK for safeguarding your build against any future structural damage, caused by unstable ground conditions. The most hazardous type of ground is where heave is generated from soil expansion, which has the ability to completely destroy buildings. Heave will act in different ways, depending upon moisture content, so even climatic changes can cause unpredictable ground movement.
There are several available methods for overcoming the destabilising effects of ground with heave potential but with all techniques, an allowance must be made for the expansion of soils. Known as ‘heave protection’, this is usually achieved by incorporating compressible materials within the sub-structure, which will allow the ground to elevate and settle without causing any distress to the structure.
With most other foundations solutions of this nature, provision of heave protection is often the most expensive element of the whole process, as costly materials are generally needed to establish it. However, our unique and highly efficient system enables us to create a void without the use of any extra materials, resulting in both time and cost savings for our clients, whilst at the same time, lowering our carbon footprint. It serves as an effective solution when dealing with contaminated sites as, in addition to reduced costs, it enables landfill gas ventilation and facilitates the installation of gas proof membrane. As the LIPS system eradicates the need for deep excavations, it helps to preserve the surrounding environment by enabling us to work in close proximity to trees and within root matrices without causing them any damage or distress. Without deep excavations and associated processes such as, cranage, risk to safety is significantly reduced when compared to traditional methods, rendering it a more assured and extremely safe way of constructing foundations.
How it Works
Our unique collapsible shuttering system, which is retrievable for future use, allows us to create voids ranging from 225mm to 300mm. This saving alone is immense for our clients and for sites with multiple plots and should not be underestimated. Once the slab has sufficiently cured, the shuttering system is collapsed and removed. The perimeter is trimmed of formwork and a suitable barrier is placed around the perimeter to prevent backfill from falling into the void. The slab is then ready for the next trade.
